Emma donoghue haven review5/23/2023 The three men set out on a pilgrimage to locate this island with the intention of establishing a monastic retreat. One is Trian and the other Cormac, an older monk who played the lyre the previous evening. In the middle of the night Artt wakes the abbot to tell him that he’s had a dream: a vision of an island in the sea where he sees himself with two others. Moreover, he is not just a scholar priest Artt has also spread the light of God, and is rumoured to have converted whole tribes across Europe. Esteemed by all the other monks, Artt is ‘said to have read every book written, and has copied out dozens’. Also at the meal is Artt, a travelling monk with ‘the bearing of a warrior king’ and the most exciting visitor Trian has ever beheld. We are introduced to Trian, a 19-year-old monk who is ‘still growing, and always hungry’. In a small seventh-century monastery on the coast of Ireland, the monks are celebrating the first fast day after Easter.

Cursed by Thomas Wheeler5/23/2023 I feel like I’m this book’s exasperated mother: “I’m not mad, just disappointed.”įor a long time, we didn’t see a lot of Arthurian retellings and spinoffs. She struggles to unite her people, avenge her family, and discover the truth about her destiny.īut perhaps the one thing that can change Destiny itself is found at the edge of a blade. She wields a sword meant for the one true king, battling paladins and the armies of a corrupt king. Nimue teams up with a charming mercenary named Arthur and refugee Fey Folk from across England. Her mission leaves little room for revenge, but the growing power within her can think of little else. Charged by her dying mother to reunite an ancient sword with a legendary sorcerer, Nimue is now her people’s only hope. That is, until her entire village is slaughtered by Red Paladins, and Nimue’s fate is forever altered. Her connection to dark magic made her something to be feared in her Druid village, and that made her desperate to leave… Whosoever wields the Sword of Power shall be the one true King.īut what if the Sword has chosen a Queen? Featuring 8 full color and 30 black-and-white pieces of original artwork by Frank Miller. The Lady of the Lake is the true hero in this cinematic twist on the tale of King Arthur created by Thomas Wheeler and legendary artist, producer, and director Frank Miller (300, Batman: The Dark Night Returns, Sin City).

The bone houses book5/23/2023 Ryn meets her first BONE HOUSES- dead people who don’t die and wonder around the forest at night time- when she was a little child, following secretly her father to the forest without listening his warnings. I think I made the best choice for my Halloween week by reading this epic, fantastic journey, with the sweet touch of Welsh folklore and urban tales introduces a rough, strong, invincible, brave heroine Aderyn (let’s call him Ryn), the gravedigger! Spooky, heart throbbing, can you hear it? BA BOOM! BA BOOM! THUMP! THUMP! Those kind of perfectly written, well-crafted thriller stories with adorable characters always make me feel alive! So I toss around 4 and 5 stars and finally I decided to be good-hearted grader (or I could find somebody wearing Ryn’s costumes for Halloween at my door, chasing me with her axe) and clicked to 5 HORRIFYING STARS!

Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon5/22/2023 Through those 18 iterations, we see everything from giant-brained "superminds" to genetically-engineered supermen to aquatic fishmen and much, much more. During that period humanity evolves through what Olaf describes as 18 different species of men (our present being the "First Men" of the title). Written in the 1930's, this is a future history that tells the story of mankind over a span of 2 billion years (yes billion with a B) from 1930 until approximately the year 2,000,000,000. I can not believe I have not heard more about this book as being one of the true "classics" of science fiction. WOW, this book is in a class all by itself for originality, imagination and scope. This review is only for Last and First Men as I have not yet read Star Maker.Ĥ.0 stars.

Agatha christie book the hollow5/22/2023 But Clara and Agatha found a way forward and from the age of 15 Agatha boarded at a succession of pensions and took piano and singing lessons. There were more money worries and talk of selling Ashfield. Clara was distraught and Agatha became her mother’s closest companion. Her father, not well since the advent of financial difficulties, died after a series of heart attacks. When she was five, the family spent some time in France having rented out the family home of Ashfield to economise, and it was here with her “governess” Marie, that Agatha learnt her idiomatic but erratically spelt French. Agatha invented imaginary friends, played with her animals, attended dance classes and began writing poems when she was still a child. Where did her creativity come from? She absorbed the children’s stories of the time - Edith Nesbit (The Story of the Treasure Seekers, The Railway Children) and Louisa M Alcott (Little Women) but also poetry and startling thrillers from America.

After being presented successfully at the Royal National Theatre, London in 1979, the play moved to the West End followed by Broadway. Beg for Mercy by Shannon Dermott5/22/2023 Also – oO, spoiler… I liked that she sticks to this one guy. Might be because of the monster inside of her that draws the guys near. I also like that its not the typical “1 girl 2 loveinterest” type of thing, but there are quite a lot of guys interested in her. But nothing happens to Flynn.Īs the story progresses, more hot guys come in the picture. So when she has to kiss the #1 elite hottie Flynn from school at a spin-the-bottle-game she nearly freaks. Furthermore, she has to keep that a secret. Thats because she is a succumbus, as it turns out. Mercy is a 16, 17 year young girl and desperatly wants to have a love life, which is not possible for her. Everything that happes playes like a movie right in your head. It’s that amazing! It feels like reading a TV series. It just draws you in – I could not stop reading and read all 3 books that are available at the moment in 30hours. Her worst nightmare, her personal curse, her very life, only gets dangerously worse.įrom the first sentences on I loved this book. Dating, no love, was now completely and utterly impossible. A small detail her mother conveniently never told her will take her life for an abrupt u-turn. The kiss that originally could have meant she would finally have a boyfriend, now was the kiss that could have very nearly ended his life. Sixteen year old Mercy Moore’s life got more than just complicated. Beg for Mercy (Cambion #1) \\ 473 pages \\ Kindle Edition $3.59 \\ Paperback $11.99 |
