He stated that “ any numerical estimate would prove to be an underestimate”. But Cipolla was convinced that we underestimated their number and influence in our lives and in society. That there are stupid people in the world is well known. Always and inevitably, each of us underestimates the number of stupid individuals in the world These are the words of the famous professor of economic history Carlo Cipolla, who taught at the universities of Pavia and Berkeley and published academic works in which he analyzed overpopulation throughout history but passed to posterity thanks to his “Theory of Stupidity”, condensed in his book “The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity”, a treatise on human stupidity with satirical overtones. “With the smile on his lips, as if he were doing the most natural thing in the world, the stupid will appear on the spur of the moment to spoil your plans, destroy your peace, complicate your life and work, make you lose money, time, good humor, productivity, and all this without malice, without remorse and without reason. (Article by Jennifer Delgado republished from ) They’re an unorganized group, without a leader or norm, but in spite of that, they act in perfect harmony, as guided by an invisible hand. “The stupid ones are more fearsome than Mafia, the military-industrial complex or the Communist International.

Real life by brandon taylor5/21/2023 He's just always kind of looking for that other shoe to drop, and he's someone who is just much more comfortable being alone. And he - he's just so deeply suspicious of other people, even when they love him and they sort of show him consideration. TAYLOR: Wallace is a person who struggles to form connections. It's called "Real Life," and he's written much of his own experience into the main character. It's incredibly alienating.ĬORNISH: After four years, Taylor left to write fiction. TAYLOR: You're in a lab for long periods of time, often at night, by yourself, talking to no one, just picking worms over and over. And so for me, going into science, even with my, you know, small graduate stipend, that was the most money anyone in my family had made.ĬORNISH: But Taylor was also the only black queer man in his program doing a job that was already isolating by nature. Before Brandon Taylor became a writer, he was a biochemistry researcher, breeding microscopic worms in a lab.īRANDON TAYLOR: I come from a very working-class background in rural Alabama.

Unearthly by cynthia hand5/21/2023 In her vision, there is always a boy by a fire, and Clara decides she is supposed to rescue him. Since that time, she has been having visions or dreams that suggest what her purpose will be, since all angel-bloods have a mission, even if they don’t know at first what it is. Two years previously, Clara found out she had angel blood (her mother is half-angel). And the charming protagonist, 16-year-old Clara Gardner, makes fun of the genre herself with gentle but effective humor which pulls the reader solidly into her orbit. The angelic nature of some of the characters is treated as just another teenage problem, in a way. Although I had heard a lot of praise for this series, at first, all I could think was, “gah, more angels in high school.” But this series is actually much better than that brief description would imply.
